The Madras Chamber in partnership with the Center of Excellence in Urban Transport, at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, is organizing a meeting on “Sustainable Urban Freight in Chennai” on Thursday, 15^th of June, 2017 between 10:00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. at GRT Grand (Emerald Hall), T. Nagar, Chennai – 17. In this meeting, the experiences and findings from the  research conducted by IIT M in the project titled “To develop a comprehensive freight-planning framework for Chennai” sponsored by Shakthi Sustainable Energy Foundation, Delhi will be shared with the participants.

Urban freight movement is the backbone of a city’s economy and livelihood. Every day, 24x7, as we sleep in the night and go about our activities during the day, a silent, inter-connected city logistics system works in the background ensuring we get our morning milk, newspaper, food supplies, medicines, gadgets, furniture, construction material etc.  City logistics in Chennai and other Indian cities operate in a decentralized distributed manner offering immense scope for efficiency improvements. IIT Madras has been studying ways to mitigate urban freight congestion and emissions to encourage sustainable freight movement in Chennai. For the past 11 months IIT Madras has been conducting surveys and studies to understand the characteristics of freight industy, analyzing issues and challenges faced by both shippers and truckers from a variety of perspectives. The highlights of the research would be presented and discussed with you in this meeting to decide on the way forward.

It is a forum to bring together the stakeholders including government, industry, and academia. This meeting gives us a great platform/opportunity to brainstorm/discuss various solutions to positively impact city logistics towards reducing congestion and emissions. The ideas and deliberations will shape the scope and objectives of the next phase of this project.
